Placer grad scrambling for rock stardom in contest - page 2 of 2

Star 98.7 - a rock radio station that veers toward alternative - is giving Murphy what he believes is a good shot at making a move up the music ladder. He'll be beating the odds if he does - there are 450 other videos to contend with - but he was given a big advantage this past week when the station's Web site featured his photo and link to his video. n n n

If Murphy makes it past the first elimination round, he faces a smaller talent pool for another listener-viewer poll on the station's Web site at www.star987.com/pages/rockstar. There's also a free download of "I'm On A High" at his Web site at http://www.devlinmurphy.com/.

The final round would see the competition down to 10 acts performing at L.A.'s Key Club, with the star of the "24" TV show providing input on who wins. There's also a $25,000 prize.

If you're feeling in a "Support Your Local Musician" mood, go to the Star 98.7 site, listen and vote.

Before graduation, Murphy lived six years in Auburn with his mother, Shoshana Henderson, now a Placerville resident. Before that, he was in L.A. and spent many days at his father, Tom Murphy's Track Record recording studio. There he found himself listening and watching as the likes of Aerosmith, blink-182, The Offspring, Jane's Addiction and Tupac Shakur worked on recordings.

One prized picture Murphy has shows him - in Boy Scout uniform - with Dexter Holland, the punky voice of The Offspring. Murphy recalls watching the "Die Hard" trilogy with blink-182 and sharing a meal with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler (El Pollo Loco for the pint-sized Murphy, middle eastern fare for Tyler).

With plenty of inspiration from his past, Murphy's eying a future in the music industry. Now he's hoping for a little boost from Auburn. Media Life's Gus Thomson can be reached at gust@goldcountrymedia. com, or (530) 852-0232. Or post a comment at auburnjournal.com.
